If you are in Vietnam or intend to travel Vietnam, take Mai Chau valley (Hoa Binh) as a destination

Mai Chau is located in Hoa Binh Province, approximately 135km from Hanoi and 60km from Hoa Binh Town. From the top of Cun Mountain, one can admire the superb panorama of Mai Chau surrounded by a green valley and stilt houses. Stilt houses border both sides of the roads. The houses are quite large with palm leaf roofs and polished bamboo-slat floors. The kitchen is located in the center of the house; the cooking as well as the making of the colorful tho cam, the material used by Thai minority to make their clothes, takes place in the kitchen. The windows are large and decorated with patterns. Each house also has a pond to breed fish. Many minorities, including the Thai ethnic group, live in Mai Chau.
Tourists especially enjoy the minority specialty dishes including rice cooked in bamboo and grilled meat. They also enjoy watching traditional dancing, music performances (bronze, drums, gongs), and Thai minority singing and dancing. The remote minority villages are attractive sites for tourists.

Water puppet – traditional Vietnamses performing art

March 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

waterpuppet_1
Mua Roi Nuoc or Water Puppet is a unique art which has it origin in the delta of the Red river in the tenth century. Some of the earliest troupes are in Nguyên Xá commune, Đông Hưng district, Thai Binh province. The farmers in this region devised a form of entertainment using what natural medium they can find in their environment. This unique art first appeared around the 15th century, when post-harvest, artists who were also farmers would gather to perform and relax. In ancient times, the ponds and the rice paddies after harvest were the stage for these impromptu shows. This art form is unique to North Vietnam and only finds its way to the world stage in recent years as a result of the normalized relation with the West. Today the Thang Long puppet troupe is the most well known in Ha Noi.
Modern, water puppetry is performed in a pool of water with the water surface being the stage. The puppeteers stand behind a screen and control the puppets using long bamboo rods and string mechanism hidden beneath the water surface. The puppets are carved out of wood and often weigh up to 15 kg. A traditional Vietnamese orchestra provides background music accompaniment. Singers of Cheo (a form of opera) with origin in north Vietnam sing songs which tell the story being acted out by the puppets

The theme of the skits is rural and has a strong reference to Vietnamese folklore. It tells of day-to-day living in rural Vietnam and Vietnamese folk tales that are told older generation to younger generation. Of which stories of the harvest, of fishing and of festivals are highlighted.

The water also provides the best setting for the puppeteers’ theme: day-to-day village life. Water puppets bring wry humor to scenes of farming, fishing, festival events such as buffalo fights, and children’s games of marbles and coin-toss. Fishing turns into a game of wits between the fisherman and his prey, with the fisherman getting the short end (often capturing his surprised neighbor by mistake). Besides village life, scenes include legends and national history. Lion dogs romp like puppies while dragons exhale smoke and shoot sprays of water at the audience. Teu, a pig-tailed bumpkin, is the character who usually plays the role of introducing the performances. The introduction is always accompanied by a small folk orchestra. Spotlights and colorful flags adorn the stage and create a festive atmosphere.

Legends and national history are also told through short skits. Many of the skits, especially those involving the tales of day-to-day living, often have a humorous twist.

Water puppetry has always gone hand in hand with festivals. Each Lunar March 13, Bo Duong villagers hold village festival to commemorate their tutelary god. Aside from worship, the festival is also an opportunity for villagers to relax by watching water puppetry, taking in fireworks displays, flying kites and entering cock-fighting contests. The festival always attracts thousands of attendants. Village festivals are great wind down for farmers and artists alike.

The beach Non Nước is also a place that exist precious and rare seaweeds such as gracilarias “yellow thread” and glacilaria “screw” that have high value of exporting.

With green water and white sand, Non Nuoc Beach stretches five kilometers along the shore of Hoa Hai Ward at the foot of Ngu Hanh Son (The Marble Mountains). The beach is

famous for its seaweed, which reaches exportation standards. Many five-star hotels were built in Non Nuoc to accommodate the domestic and foreign tourists in the area. Together with its feature of wave degree, climate, weather and salinity, Non Nuoc Beach is suitable for water sports, especially surfing. Along the beach, on the white sand is a forest of age-old casuarinas which is shady, green and is waving in the whistling wind. This is an ideal place for resting and camping. Han River bridge in DaNang- Vietnam

March 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

 download11

Nature has been awarded the Da Nang good for a city to stay and to enjoy the healthy fun. Han river as background for the series along streets, and always bring cool wind and moisture to propitiate the tropical sunshine.

Danang lies on the west side of the Han River and the beaches are to the east. The Song Han Bridge helps beach driven tourists to get from their hotels to the area’s famous beaches.

In the middle of the night, traffic is stopped from crossing the Song Han Bridge and it swings on its axis to allow shipping traffic to pass along the river. The Song Han Bridge in Danang is a suspension bridge that is dazzlingly lit up at night. The area around the bridge is beautifully paved into a riverside promenade and is the location of Danang’s cultural center.

Some of the pressure will soon be taken off the bridge as the Danang regional government plans to build another bridge to traverse the Han River in Danang. Once the new bridge is completed tourists will be able to leave Da Nang International Airport on Nguyen Van Linh Highway and get to the city’s beaches even quicker. The new bridge will be built in the shape of a dragon.

The Song Han Bridge was built by the people of Danang and holds a special place in their pride for their city. The bridge also has the distinction of being the first swing bridge to be built in Vietnam. The bridge is an important part of Danang’s cityscape.

Welcome to the largest pagoda -Bai Dinh

March 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

baidinhpa-tamthetem

The Bai Dinh Pagoda in northern Viet Nam’s Ninh Binh province promises to be the largest pagoda. Even though it is still under construction, with expected date of completion in 2010 to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long or Hanoi, it is still attracting a large number of pilgrims and tourists.

Located in Gia Sinh Commune, Gia Vien District, the half-finished pagoda is already receiving flocks of visitors daily despite being surrounded by scaffoldings and 500 masons working around the clock.

One of its temples is to house a 100-ton statue of the Great Buddha which is the heaviest of its kind in Southeast Asia while the other will feature three 50-ton Buddha statues.

The four were cast from Russian-made copper by renowned artists from Nam Dinh province.

one of two giant bell in Bai DInh The pagoda will also be home to two large bronze bells 27 ton and 36 tons, designed by famous artisans in Hue City.

The former was brought to the construction site two years ago and has sat on a hilltop ever since while the other, 36 tons and 5.4m high, is the biggest bronze bell in Southeast Asia.

On another hill sit around 200 statues of arhats or la han saints two meters tall. A further 300 are expected to come by late this year.

When all are finished, this undoubtedly will make Bai Dinh Pagoda the biggest gathering of arhat statues in Southeast Asia.

Other prominent features of the pagoda are two giant temples by the side of the Bai Dinh Mountain, 200m high.

Hanoi Only in Hanoi

November 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

By http://www.vntraveltips.com: Each street has its own hallmark, ones full of hustles and bustles as SaiGon commercial ones and others lined with greenery shadows, tinged with its own tranquility, soothing Hanoi suns. Nothing can be compared with a morning walk around Sword Lake (Hoan Kiem Lake) which refreshes us after hardworking hours and guides us to ancient Tortoise Tower, taking us back to an enduring legend i.e. Kim Quy God ascending from Lake Floor, holding a gold sword in his mouth that LeLoi king gave back after conquering enemies.

Sublime Pen Tower (Thap But), Red The Huc bridge, TranQuoc Pagoda with its bells toiling in tune with thin misty layers in early Hanoi winter mornings, all seem to take visitors out of the mundane world.

Afternoons, basking with sunshine, walk around West Lake to see the Lake’s immenseness, radiant faces of youngsters flocking to an August Quan Thanh, evocative of Hanoi highs and lows, and enjoy the blowing winds. Back to Quang Ba area across Phu Tay Ho, nestling in luxuriant gardens are now inviting villas and luxurious mansions. Keep reading →

Shopping in Saigon

November 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Since the monumental policy shift to create a market economy in Vietnam, buying and selling is as ubiquitous as breathing. Housewives shop the market by the day or even by the meal, rather than weekly.

Street-front shop houses abound and sidewalk vendors don’t hang their shingle, they just lay down their mat and display their wares. Everywhere!

You will fill your suitcase when shopping in Saigon. Read on and we will tell you all you need to know to get the best deals and learn about the best places to shop in Saigon. If you get hungry during your shopping spree, stop for some finger food or relax in one of the Saigon Restaurants along the city’s shopping streets. For things to see and do during your stay, our Saigon Destination Travel Guide will point you in the right direction. More general information about shopping around the country can be found at our Vietnam Shopping Guide .

Saigon Shopping Guide

The range of merchandise available in Saigon is truly fantastic. It’s true; if you can’t buy it here, you don’t need it! The list we have collected below should give you a place to start looking for that special something. We’ve divided into categories to make it easier for you to find a place in Saigon that sells what you are looking for.

Bargaining is still the most common way to buy things in Saigon. Some people relish bargaining, others loathe it. The rules are not very complicated if you think of it like this.

The whole thing is a harmonious Yin-Yang balance. You want the item. The vendor wants your money. Yin-Yang! The maximum price you are willing to pay is the value of your desire for the item. The minimum price the vendor is willing to accept is the value of their desire for your money. Yin-Yang! Bargaining is simply a search for the Yin-Yang balance between your desire and the vendor’s.

If items for sale have price labels there is normally no bargaining (the vendor might lose a cent or two on buying the labels!).

Shopping in Vietnam

November 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

As a general principal, items sold in touristy areas, with no visible price tags, must be bargained for – expect the vendor to start the bidding at two to five times the real price. Tagged items may be negotiable, but more often than not the prices are fixed.

Please don’t buy souvenirs taken from historical sites, or made from endangered wildlife such as turtle shells. Keep reading →
